Scarecrow Harvest, Oct. 4 to Nov. 1, downtown. The 21st annual display fills downtown with more than 150 scarecrows built by schools, nonprofits, families, neighborhoods and businesses. Judging is Wednesday, Oct. 14, in four categories, and winners are announced at Boo Bash. The Scarecrow Puzzle Hunt, sponsored by the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau, sends you around downtown with clues; pick up a puzzle pack at City Hall, 2 Park Plaza, or download one from Solving Fun. Wire & Wood Songwriters Festival, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-10. The free festival marks its 13th year with more than 40 performances on seven downtown stages. Corey Smith headlines Friday and Sister Hazel closes Saturday night, the city announced. The city calendar lists 6 to 11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday. Boo Bash, Saturday, Oct. 17, 3 to 7 p.m. The city’s free Halloween festival at The Grove, behind the Alpharetta Community Center, 175 Roswell St., with a costume dance-off, carnival games, bounce houses and vendors. More in our trick-or-treat guide.
Battle of the Bands, Saturday, Oct. 17, 6 to 9 p.m. Youth bands compete on the terrace of the Alpharetta Arts Center, 238 Canton St., according to the city calendar. Bring a chair.
Paint the Town, Oct. 20-24. Arts Alpharetta’s plein-air painting competition puts artists around town for five days, with an awards ceremony and reception at the Alpharetta Arts Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The paintings stay on display through Nov. 14. Details: Arts Alpharetta.

Scottsdale Farms, Milton. The pumpkin patch at 15639 Birmingham Highway opened Sept. 10 and is open during store hours: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free; most pumpkins are priced by weight. Source: Scottsdale Farms pumpkin patch page.
Warbington Farms, Cumming. The farm at 5555 Crow Road runs a fall season with a pumpkin patch, corn maze and fun park; pumpkins are not included in admission.
