Main roads

  • Georgia 400 (GDOT’s State Route 400) is the spine. Exit 10 is Old Milton Parkway, the way to Avalon and to Wills Park, about 2 miles west, the historical society’s directions say. GDOT’s express lanes FAQ (PDF) numbers the North Springs MARTA Station exit 5C and McGinnis Ferry Road exit 12A, at the Forsyth County line.
  • State Route 9, Main Street, runs through downtown. GDOT is widening it between Upper Hembree Road and Windward Parkway, the city reported in April 2026.
  • Old Milton Parkway, Windward Parkway, Mansell Road and Haynes Bridge Road carry traffic across the city to and from Georgia 400.

GDOT is building about 16 miles of toll express lanes on Georgia 400 from North Springs to McFarland Parkway. Construction began in spring 2026, and GDOT’s fact sheet (PDF) says the lanes are expected to open in 2031. Most lane closures are overnight; our road construction page lists them.

MARTA buses and trains

Alpharetta has no rail station. MARTA buses run to North Springs Station, the north end of the Red Line. MARTA has two park-and-ride lots in the city, at Mansell Road and Windward Parkway, the city says.

Route MARTA’s name Runs between
85 Roswell North Springs Station and Mansell Park & Ride
140 North Point Parkway North Springs Station and the North Point Parkway corridor
185 Alpharetta North Springs Station and Windward Park & Ride

Endpoints come from MARTA’s route pages and service alerts. MARTA buses run 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekdays and 5 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. on weekends, its website says. Use the MARTA trip planner for exact times; MARTA posts trip cancellations on its home page.

Parking at North Springs: MARTA lots and decks are open 24 hours, and parking is free for stays under 14 hours, according to MARTA’s parking fees page. Longer stays at North Springs carry a daily charge.

Coming later: GDOT’s express lanes FAQ says bus rapid transit will use the new lanes, with stations at Holcomb Bridge Road, North Point Mall and the Windward Park & Ride.

Getting to the airport

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is less than an hour’s drive from Alpharetta, the city says. By transit, take a MARTA bus to North Springs and ride the Red Line. Red and Gold line trains run directly to the Airport Station, inside the Domestic Terminal between the North and South baggage claims, MARTA’s airport page says. Coming home after 8:30 p.m., you may need to change to a Red Line train at Lindbergh Center. International Terminal travelers take the airport’s free shuttle or the Plane Train.

Biking and walking

  • Big Creek Greenway: a concrete path of about 12 miles, mostly 12 feet wide, along Big Creek parallel to North Point Parkway, from the Union Hill Park trailhead to Mansell Road, the city says. Closures for flooding or maintenance go out on the Statusfy app; questions to 678-297-6130.
  • Alpha Loop: the city’s multi-use path. Its first full segment, finished in 2020, links downtown and Avalon.

Trailheads, parking and the e-bike and leash rules are in our walking and biking trails guide.

Downtown parking

The city’s downtown parking page says it is adding temporary parking areas, building two municipal parking decks and making agreements with private owners for public use of their lots at certain times. On its Food Truck Alley page, the city lists free parking in the decks at 2 Park Plaza (City Hall) and 92 Milton Ave., and a paid public lot on Old Roswell Street.

The city’s parking page does not publish time limits or enforcement hours. Read the signs at each space or lot, and call City Hall, 678-297-6000, with questions. Lots can close for festivals; the Old Roswell Street lot closes for Food Truck Alley nights, and our Wire & Wood guide covers that festival.
