Waggy World Paw Park is the city’s fenced, 1.5-acre off-leash park at Wills Park, with a small-dog area for dogs of 25 pounds or less and a large-dog area open to all sizes. The city’s rules include:

  • Every dog must wear a valid rabies tag and have current vaccinations.
  • No more than three dogs per handler. A handler 16 or older must be present with a leash.
  • Dogs stay leashed while entering and leaving.
  • Children must be at least 8 and with a parent or guardian.
  • No dogs in heat and no dogs under 4 months old.
  • No food, tobacco, alcohol or rawhide inside.
  • Pick up after your dog; bags are provided. Aggressive dogs must leave at once.

Some water fountains are shut off in winter, and the park may close for maintenance or special events without notice.

Avalon’s dog park sits on the residential side of the district. Dogs may run unleashed inside the fenced area; the rules are posted at the front gate. Avalon also has dog relief stations on the first floor of its North and South parking decks.

Fetch Park Alpharetta is a private off-leash dog park with a bar, food and drink, a dog wash and night lighting. It says humans get in free and asks first-time dog owners to read its rules and preregister through its FAQ page.

Trails where leashed dogs are welcome

City code treats the Big Creek Greenway and the Alpha Loop as city parks, so the park leash rule applies on both. The greenway is a 12-foot-wide concrete path through the woods along Big Creek; the Alpha Loop links downtown, Avalon and the Northwinds area. Both are open dawn to dusk. Trailheads, parking and distances are in our walking and biking trails guide.

The Alpha Loop Foundation describes the loop as a place to walk “alone or with your best friend.” Bring bags: the code requires pet waste to go in designated containers.

Patios and places that say dogs are welcome

We list only places whose own website says dogs are welcome. Policies can change, so ask the host before you sit down.

  • Avalon, 400 Avalon Blvd. Avalon’s concierge page calls it “a dog-friendly property” and says the concierge team hands out water and dog treats. Its code of conduct asks guests to leash pets and clean up after them. Each restaurant at Avalon sets its own patio policy. In the holiday season Avalon has offered walk-up pet portraits with Santa; see our holiday lights and Christmas events guide.
  • Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, 10800 Haynes Bridge Road, 770-759-0141. The chain’s FAQ says dogs are welcome on its outdoor patios, with a free bowl of water, but its dog menu is not offered at Georgia locations. Its patio rules say no dogs on tables, laps or chairs. Hours are on its Alpharetta page.
  • Fetch Park Alpharetta, above, serves food and drink and hosts weekly trivia and music bingo nights.

Leash rules in Alpharetta

In city parks, on the greenway and on the Alpha Loop. Section 32-4 of the Alpharetta Code of Ordinances says all pets must be on a leash and under physical control at all times, except in designated off-leash areas. It also says:

  • No pets or animals on athletic fields.
  • No animals inside buildings, in city swimming areas or inside pool fencing, or in pool concession and restroom areas.
  • Pet waste must be picked up and put in designated pet waste containers.
  • Service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act are allowed.

Section 32-4(b) makes the greenway system and the Alpha Loop parks for these rules. A violation is a misdemeanor.

Everywhere else in the city. Section 6-1 adopts Fulton County’s animal control rules. Under Fulton County Code Section 34-205, a dog that leaves its owner’s property must be on a leash no longer than six feet, held by a competent person. At home, a dog must be kept in by a fence, wall, other enclosure or leash. Section 34-202 requires the rabies and license tag to be on the dog’s collar.

Licensing and lost pets

Fulton County requires every pet to be registered. A one-year license is $10 for a spayed or neutered pet and $25 for an unaltered pet; three years is $25 or $60 and needs a three-year rabies shot. Register online through PetData, by mail or in person at the county shelter, 1251 Fulton Industrial Blvd. NW, Atlanta.

If your dog goes missing, the county’s lost pets page says to report it on Petco Love Lost, alert neighbors and visit the shelter within 24 hours. The county waives reclaim fees and the dog-at-large citation the first time a lost pet is brought in.
