Volunteers meet at Rock Mill Park at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, to clear litter from Alpharetta's streams and greenways. Pre-register with the city first.
The city of Alpharetta is asking for volunteers to clean up its streams on Saturday, Oct. 17. The cleanup is the city’s part of Rivers Alive, Georgia’s yearly volunteer watershed cleanup. It runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon, starting at Rock Mill Park, 3100 Kimball Bridge Road.
The city announced the date in a release on Tuesday. It asks volunteers to sign up ahead of time, because projects are assigned from the pre-registration list.
How the morning works
The city’s release sets out the schedule:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 8:30 a.m. | Sign-in at Rock Mill Park |
| 8:45 a.m. | Short gathering with announcements, then volunteers head out to their projects |
| 11:30 a.m. | Volunteers return to the park with what they collected, for weighing, counting and photos |
| Noon | The cleanup ends |
What volunteers do
The jobs listed by the city are:
- picking up litter and debris along greenways and roadways
- clearing litter from streams
- stenciling storm drains
- other projects arranged through pre-registration
The city said the cleanup suits families, scout troops, service groups and people coming on their own.
The Alpharetta event is put on by the city and the Alpharetta Natural Resource Commission. The statewide program’s stated mission is “to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia’s water resources,” according to the Rivers Alive website.
